Forward Focus: Student Built Chairs Created From Waste was a collaborative exhibition shown as a part of Melbourne Design Week 2024. Curated by Zachary Frankel and supported by Tait, students were tasked with producing a chair entirely from waste materials, guided by industry mentors, over a two-day workshop.
In response to the exhibition’s lengthy title, we utilised varying widths within a single typographic family, a decision that informed the resulting type treatment across all collateral. This approach created an unexpected and informal feel, aligning with the exhibition’s focus on experimentation rather than a polished, homogenised “finished” outcome.
The exhibition signage was designed to begin at the front window, drawing in passersby with context about the creation of the displayed works and the exhibition’s core concept. Inside, large-scale imagery panels were displayed alongside a hanging metal didactic panel, to visually communicate that the resulting chairs were borne from an experimental and collaborative workshop experience.
